If you could start a country from scratch, what would it be like?

“I would like to start off this country with observing the land, it’s rhythms, cycles, seasons, patterns, weather, animals, plants, waters, etc. Each person would be encouraged to do so, to sit and observe, to see what they see. The country would run by a ‘take what you need’ vs masculine ‘take what you want’ idea. Children would not go to school to simply sit in classrooms all day long, they would be taught through ways of many different people, in different skillsets and application of creative thinking, they would connect with elders to learn how to sustain the land and the community that they live upon. I think it all starts with children, and so starting them off to trust their intuition, to teach them beyond sex, to care for the land and their bodies, to encourage them to develop uniquely would create a group of people who are self empowered and without every psychological ailment in the book. There are many more aspects to talk about, but this is the one I want to bring to the forefront for now.”

If you could design a country from scratch, what would it be like?

Union of the American Commune – The UAC is a country that comprises all of America plus some parts of Europe that have been occupied. The capital and largest city would be Washington D.C, New York, Brasilia or any city depending on who you ask. The country is made up of about 3 provinces: North America, comprising the United States, Canada and Mexico, Central America with all of Central America and South America comprising of the old countries of South America. Keep in mind, that these provinces are further divided into several states, with each state having its own constitution and anthem as well as its own motto.

Government

The country is a Unitary One-Party Socialist Republic, however they’ve been adapting some capitalist features in order to ease tensions with the rest of the world. The country follows the historical paths and instead of having a “president”, it has a Premier which controls the American Associate Council or the Politburo for the Russians.

The Premier usually gives several speeches on the Victory over Europe and the May Parade. This “May Parade” is done to congratulate the soldiers who fought for the country and returned home or died.

The AAC is comprised of hundreds of representatives of the People’s American Party and it’s further divided into 6 people who usually give speeches, some of them being given by the Premier himself.

The economy of the country is doing pretty well with several economic reforms being done to ease tensions with the poor people. Homeless people make about 0.01% of the people in the UAC and there are no elite classes since they’re considered bourgeois. The 0.01% of the homeless people usually are given money to buy clothes, food or even houses.

Since 2037, the UAC has made several colonies on both the Moon and Mars and is planning to create the first space city in Mars by 2078. This space city will be called “New Amerika”.

Technology

The technology is amazing. You’ve got everything from plasma rifles to bioengineered shields. Conscription was introduced right before the War over Fort Malagui which almost caused a World War 3. However, the War over Fort Malagui ended in American victory.

The military is made of about 2.8M men, thousands of tanks, thousands of aircraft… The number will increase by 2054, however, with the UAC planning to at least have 4.1M men.

Land

That’s the Union of the American Commune.

Currency

The currency is every currency the countries used to have (i.e: Spain having the € while the US having the $).”

If you could create a country from scratch, what would it be like?

“If I could create an ideal country from scratch, then I would want it to be an island, because those are harder to invade and easier to defend. I would want it to not be too far off the beaten path, however, because I would want to have the possibility of beneficial trading relationships with other countries. I would want it to be far enough away from the equator to have four distinct seasons, including a winter that is cold enough to kill off a good number of pests and pathogens. However, I would still want it close enough to the equator to have a good long growing season. I would also want it to sit astride strong and steady trade winds so that the development of wind power would be feasible. Somewhere around 45 degrees of latitude – probably North latitude, and probably in the middle of the Atlantic, would be ideal.

I would want the island to be large enough to host a varied topography of both level land and mountains, and thus able to support a variety of basic economic activities including agriculture, forestry, mining, as well as fishing. I would want it to get a good amount of precipitation and have an abundant fresh water supply.

I would want this island to be large enough to support a population of as much as 5–10 million people at a minimum, and maybe more. A population of this size would be necessary to support at least one or two world-class universities and a very diversified advanced economy.

Flag? Maybe a green circle in the middle of a blue field?”

If you could create a country from scratch, what would it be like?

“I’d design a 100% electronic democracy where every issue in front of the people would be voted on electronically via a website. Every citizen would be required by law to vote in national elections and the majority opinions would bind legislatures on the issues, including the national budget, tax code and foreign/trade policy. Every law proposed by any legislator would have to have buy-in or co-sponsorship for 10% of the voting public before it could be opened up for consideration in the house/parliament. This should eliminate the ability of small special interests to shove/lobby self-serving tax breaks thru congress. I would make the will of the people more important than vetoes, filibusters and bills with so many amendments they can’t be read by the congress or people before the vote. If any law is ruled unconstitutional by our Supreme Court, the legislators who sponsored the bill would be immediately expelled from office and forbidden to ever run again. All sessions and subcommittee meetings would be public, taped and archived forever. I would have web cams in the Presidents office and all top cabinet officials so their work and conversations are visible too.

There would be term limits, mandatory retirement ages, STRICT oversight for corruption and conflict of interest, and PUBLIC financing of elections and referendums. NO corporate paid gifts or speeches, NO legislators ever becoming lobbyists and MANDATORY media coverage of candidate debates where the questions come from the public, not pundits.

I would hope the citizens of this mythical country would want the government to work more like Norway and Denmark than the USA, with a progressive income tax, a very small “VAT” on liquor, pot and cigarettes, a strong social safety net, equal pay for equal work, universal healthcare and education, great investment in public transportation with a commitment to renewable energy and minimal international intervention.”

If you could create a country from scratch, what would it be like?

New Canada – It is a country that my friend and I have been creating over the past couple of years. Goverment – The Executive Branch consists of a Prime Co-Chancellor and a Sub Co-Chancellor, who are mostly all-powerful. The Legislative Branch consists of about 4 people, 2 of which are the current Co-Chancellors, they are mostly useless, only used by the Co-Chancellors, when they are in dispute. There is also a large legal codex, which I, as the Prime Co-Chancellor, cannot find for my Sub Co-Chancellor wrote it and subsequently hid it. The government is part of 706, Inc., which has many departments, such as DAS, the Department of Astronautical Services, and the DRD, the Department of Redundacy Department, etcetera. 706’s, and New Canada’s, main product/export is slightly irradiated chocolate milk, with convenient radiation kits in the cap. We have a colonized space station, and a colony on the moon, both of which are self-sustaining.

Tech

We have the most advanced tech on the planet including scifi-like shields and plasma guns, although we would have trouble winning a war due to the size of our armed forces being at most 5 people, although all are in power armor.

Land

We have the capital province of New Canada, and the provinces of New Quebec, and New New Canada.

Currency

Our main currency is the Shilling, which is worth millions of USD, due to the fact there are maybe 2o total coins.

The entire country is based off my Minecraft games with my friends.”

If you could start a country from scratch, what would it be like?

“I live in the United States of America. With that in mind, my ideas are directly influenced by America’s political system and the ways I see improvement in it, but also knowledge of other countries’ political systems that work well. I’ve had the blueprints in my head for some time but they have never been written down yet. There is certainly lots that I forgot along the way that didn’t make it to this point. With that in mind, here’s my ideal government:

  • Have a Swiss based direct democracy voting system: people can submit their own bills to the congressional body(whatever they call it) to be discussed and be voted on by citizens by referendum
  • A third, but smaller branch of congress made of short term appointed experts in various fields of knowledge that fact check, research any relevant information that would go into making a decision, and anything else that prevents emotional decisions(like declaring war on Iraq). These experts, like te religious law court in Saudi Arabia, can have conditional veto power on any ignorant decision; at least they can omit or revise ill-advised language in a bill before sending it back for reconsideration. Essentially this group would be like the crazy generic old scientist who was right all along in the movies telling the decision makers the best thing to do.
  • Preferential voting and proportional representation to have multiple parties emerge rather than just two dominant ones, which reduces polarization in politics.
  • Two Vice Presidents, not one. (American presidents usually have a vice pres on the other end of politics to “balance the ticket”. With three at the head of the presidency, there may be less deadlock.)
  • Constitutional review powers built into the constitution, because people complain about the Supreme Court making decisions they don’t like using the powers granted to them after the founding of the constitution. Also, there would be twelve of them, not nine, which would allow for the possibility of an even split so the decisions can be delayed or discussed more with more opinions involved.
  • Right to health and safety provided by the government.
  • Citizenship achieved after three years of living in a country. Citizenship also grants the ability to run for president. No worries about being a natural born citizen because it is not a constitutional requirement.
  • Federal supremacy. No more worrying about local laws. Laws are universal, and the only thing that varies locally is local taxes for local infrastructure maintenance. Subdivisions are mainly for administrative convenience. Llocal laws may exist, but only to fill in local variations that the federal law doesn’t account for however, federal law still can override these laws if they are contradictory. Also, every law enacted locally is not funded by federal money and it is up to to local administration to cover costs(so we don’t have one place feeding off the surpluses of the others.)
  • Wikipedia style law database curated by experts to keep laws up to date on any changes and bring old laws forward for possible revision. This is to help make sure no archaic/incompatible laws are being used in government actions to make sure that the government is as efficient and up to date as possible.
  • Presumed universal equality of opportunity by law, but allowing room for pluralistic accommodations that account for the individual differences that everyone has.
  • Government provides all essential services: electrical and water utilities, health services, etc. None of that free market stuff we rely on that costs more than what we could get with just centrally distribute it. Nit part of the constitution but is part of the institution.

Thats all I have right now. But essentially this is designed to have a smarter, more efficient, less gridlocked nation and by extension government as well.”
