Is there life outside of Earth?

In the 14 billion year old Universe, humans have only existed for 200,000 years or so. That’s 1/70,000th of the Universe’s lifespan. There are 100 billion stars in our galaxy alone. If another species evolved along a similar trajectory as we have, but did so 10 million years ago, they could have already visited the Earth and we would have no idea. Life first emerged on Earth 4.5 billion years ago, leaving 9 billion years prior for life to evolve elsewhere and potentially even be brought here altogether.

What will it take to satisfy human curiosity?

Curiosity is a basic trait of humans, and thus will never be satisfied.  As when we were infants, we have a sponge-like desire to learn about our surroundings.  Whether through science, philosophy, or any other means, humans have an inherent playfulness and desire to learn, even as we don’t know particularly why.  We do so because we are a special organ of the Universe designed to help the Universe become conscious of itself. The more curiosity we have, the more the Universe learns.

Is there life outside of Earth?

Just as fish have evolved for the water and birds for the sky, the other life forms in the Universe will fit the niche of their environment. For all we know, there could be a species colonizing the Universe already, but we are just a remote island yet to be discovered. Regardless, like planting a garden, the seed of intelligence must already be there for life to exist and evolve. Other life forms are likely just the harvest of different seeds. The question is: who planted us all?
