“I’d design a 100% electronic democracy where every issue in front of the people would be voted on electronically via a website. Every citizen would be required by law to vote in national elections and the majority opinions would bind legislatures on the issues, including the national budget, tax code and foreign/trade policy. Every law proposed by any legislator would have to have buy-in or co-sponsorship for 10% of the voting public before it could be opened up for consideration in the house/parliament. This should eliminate the ability of small special interests to shove/lobby self-serving tax breaks thru congress. I would make the will of the people more important than vetoes, filibusters and bills with so many amendments they can’t be read by the congress or people before the vote. If any law is ruled unconstitutional by our Supreme Court, the legislators who sponsored the bill would be immediately expelled from office and forbidden to ever run again. All sessions and subcommittee meetings would be public, taped and archived forever. I would have web cams in the Presidents office and all top cabinet officials so their work and conversations are visible too.
There would be term limits, mandatory retirement ages, STRICT oversight for corruption and conflict of interest, and PUBLIC financing of elections and referendums. NO corporate paid gifts or speeches, NO legislators ever becoming lobbyists and MANDATORY media coverage of candidate debates where the questions come from the public, not pundits.
I would hope the citizens of this mythical country would want the government to work more like Norway and Denmark than the USA, with a progressive income tax, a very small “VAT” on liquor, pot and cigarettes, a strong social safety net, equal pay for equal work, universal healthcare and education, great investment in public transportation with a commitment to renewable energy and minimal international intervention.”
